Abstract
China began to produce ethanolamine since 1960s, started early but cannot compete with developed countries. Its small production scale and weak products quality cannot the demand of economy development. Many products rely on importing.
In late 1990s, Fushun and Jilin had imported foreign technologies and equipments, which was the state of domestic ethanolamine industry. But so far, domestic ethanolamine output cannot meet market demand, China is urgent need of building large-scale ethanolamine production plants.
Over the past five years, many middle and small sized enterprises was in cut-off or semi-cut-off status due to their small production scale, weak product quality and high production costs. The operating rate was merely below 50%. Some of these manufacturers have transferred, since they adopt intermittent production capacity which produced small scale and water-contained products. It is difficult to dehydrate from the ethanolamine that over 50% of the energy spent on this procedure and caused high production cost. Impacted by imported ethanolamine, these uncompetitive enterprises had to cut-off. At the same time, the ethanolamine production enterprises are far from raw material - ethylene oxide production area. There is a risk of supply disruptions through outsourcing ethylene oxide. Besides, ethylene oxide belongs to dangerous chemicals, the high transport expense results in high production cost. Domestic ethanolamine production technology is still weak at key production indicators such as raw material consumption, energy consumption and products extraction, as well as some products indicators, for example the poor color products cannot be used to manufacture high-end cosmetics.
Before 2002, there is about 20 domestic manufacturers, the total production capacity of which is about 63.5 kt/a. However, many of these enterprises cannot compete with big enterprises and foreign competent products and are in the status of cut-off or semi-cut-off. Many business failures or approach to changing products.
In 2007, there are only about 10 domestic production enterprises, the total production capacity of which is about 59 kt/a. The main manufacturers are Fushun North Chemical Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Yinyan Specialty Chemicals Co., Ltd.. and Maoming PETRO-Chemical Shihua Co., Ltd.
